HOSTED BY STELLENBOSCH ROTARY CLUB & STELLENBOSCH ROTARACT CLUB

The first District 9350 New Generations seminar was hosted by Stellenbosch Rotary and Stellenbosch Rotaractors on the 28th of March 2009 here in Stellenbosch .

Excellently facilitated by PP Michael Lawrence, the current District New Generations Chairperson, the wonderful mix of Rotarians (including current and future District Governors, Elwyn Thompson and Mike Saxby,) Rotaractors, International youth and ambassadorial exchange students RYLA students and Interactors, workshopped a range of issues confronting the growth and development of the many New Generations projects within the various clubs in District 9350. The day finished with a competition awarding real cash prizes to the most relevant and appropriate community project.

    Comments from participants included:

    • Amazing to see Interactors, Rotaractors and Rotarians all having discussions on such an equal level.
    • Great to connect with Rotary family of all ages.
    • Great experience and a great opportunity to learn leadership skills.
    • Awesome meeting people from the Arms of Rotary.
    • Competition at the end was excellent because it allowed brainstorming between all the age groups - older Rotarians who have useful info and contacts Rotaractors lack.
    • Loved the interactive sessions, one can never really price the opportunity of sharing ideas with mature people.

More recently David Edwards, from the USA, has arrived. David will be pursuing medical studies at the Tygerberg campus of the University of Stellenbosch. We look forward to his contributions to our club.

2008/9 saw Stellenbosch Rotary club heavily involved in the excellent international Ambassadorial Student programme. We are proud to announce that our nominee, Lizette Greyling, a University of Stellenbosch honours student in physiotherapy for the disabled, has been selected to represent Rotary District 9350 as the outgoing District 2009 Ambassadorial student.

Lizette will be pursing her studies at the University of Victoria in Vancouver Island, Canada, as from September 2009. In the interim she has become a valued member of the Rotaract club and a regular participant in all Rotary events and functions. Lizette is currently developing proposals for our club on practical ways to provide support for physically challenged members of the Stellenbosch communities, with a goal to raising matching grant funds while she is overseas to grow these projects on her return.

Our 18 month old Rotaract Club has had a stunning start. Less than 9 months from their charter dinner, the club took on the huge responsibility of organizing and hosting the District Rotaract Conference here in Stellenbosch. Despite the winter weather throwing the coldest, wettest weekend at all, everyone agreed it was the best Rotaract conference in years.

The growing club has raised funds by marshalling at all cycle and running races organized by Rotarians and is firmly committed to supporting the New Energy philosophy of Stellenbosch Rotary. They are also working with the physically challenged of the local Dorothea Special School.

2009 University of Stellenbosch-Student-Orientation saw an excellent marketing exercise which resulted in a huge intake of new members who are all eagerly participating in the latest RYLA camps as well as marshalling activities. Recent highlights include the fortnightly leadership training sessions, such as Toast Masters, where some suprising expert speakers were sourced from amongst our own Rotaractors.

Both Stellenbosch Rotaract and Stellenbosch Rotary Clubs enjoy a close relationship and Rotary sponsors two Rotaractors to attend our fortnightly meetings, both project and dinner evenings, thus strengthening the bonds and providing mutual benefits to members of both clubs.
