As part of the Kick Polio Out of Africa awareness campaign, a special soccer ball is making its way through 22 polio-affected countries en route to the RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada, in June. Ambassadorial Scholarship Application - Now open!

Stellenbosch Rotaract Club invites interested students to apply for the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship for the period 2011-2012 to study abroad.The grant provides support in excess of $20,000 to students studying degrees with a strong humanitarian focus including Basic Education, economic and community development or sustainable agriculture. Interested students can send applications to Dirk Kotze from the local Stellenbosch Rotary Club.

More about the Ambassadorial Scholarship

“Ambassadorial Scholarships, The Rotary Foundation’s oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, more than 40,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is one of the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships programs. Nearly 700 scholarships were awarded for study in 2009-10. Through grants totaling approximately US$16.2 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 80 nations.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent a continued faith that today’s Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow’s community and world leaders.”

Tom Henderson: CEO & founder of Shelterbox

Fresh on the back of the visit to ShelterBox HQ in Cornwall by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall, ShelterBox Founder and CEO Tom Henderson has collected his OBE from Her Majesty The Queen.

Tom attended a ceremony at Buckingham Palace last week to receive the accolade.

He was appointed an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his outstanding contribution to charity and humanitarian work since he founded ShelterBox in 2000.

During that time ShelterBox has worked on every continent providing emergency aid after earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, hurricanes, typhoons, landslides, volcanoes and armed conflicts.

ShelterBox Family

In 2010 ShelterBox has so far responded to the devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile as well as disasters in Peru, Egypt, Kenya and Uganda. In less than three months, more than 12,000 ShelterBoxes have been distributed with thousands more set to be sent out throughout March.

As a result of Tom’s initiative and tireless work across the last decade, people who have lost everything have been given something back and the chance to start rebuilding their lives.

Speaking after the ceremony, Tom said: ‘Her Majesty asked me when ShelterBox started, where we were currently working in the world and how many people we had helped. I explained that I had just come back from Haiti and saw the tents being used myself which was very encouraging.

‘While this is a personal award, I feel I am receiving it on behalf of the ShelterBox family around the world.’

Ambassadorial Student: A word from Sue

Hi Stellenbosch Rotary and Rotaract,

I’m just writing to say thank you for the warm wishes for our Haven of Hope Fundraiser, and to let you know it was a great success! We raised R 8,000 for Haven of Hope to buy a soundproof partition, and it was a great night.

I’m including some photos: The first photo is of my Rotary club president Bob and two other members showing the Zulu love letter pins I gave them during my speech about Stellenbosch at one of our Rotary meetings.

The next photo shows me, 2 of my sisters and some of the African dancers we had for the fundraising event.
