As part of our New Energy Initiative and our goal to ensure that all our projects and activities are sustainable Stellenbosch Rotary Club decided to ”off-set” the environmetal impact of travelling to the conference by purchasing two trees from Food & Trees for Africa (http://www.trees.co.za). The trees will be planted as part of Food & Trees for Africa’s National Tree Distribution Programme in the Stellenosch Winelands area.

Bike Town Africa hits Stellenbosch town to put Boland Hospices on wheels

As part of our New Energy Initiative, Stellenbosch Rotary Club teamed up with long time partner Stellenbosch Hospice to help organize a two day Hospice-on-Wheels event where 144 brand new bikes were handed over by Bike Town Africa to Hospice Home Based Carers and Community Development Workers in the Boland towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl, Grabouw, Somerset West, and Franschhoek.

For first time riders it was a real thrill to not only become instant bike owners, but donning their sparkling new helmets. Wobbling slightly the first timers undertook a 7 km cycle tour through Stellenbosch accompanied by Rotarians from the club, ending up with a blessing by Stellenbosch’s Mayor Mr. Patrick Swartz at the Kayamandi Tourism Centre.

These bikes make a major difference to the daily work load of the Hospice carers, enabling them to more easily and quickly access their patients by using their bikes, a new experience for almost all of them. The fact that they can share these bikes with family members in off duty times, means a whole host of new converts to the world of cycling and consequent healthy living through this extremely worthwhile project.
