    More about the Ambassadorial Scholarship

“Ambassadorial Scholarships, The Rotary Foundation’s oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, more than 40,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is one of the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships programs. Nearly 700 scholarships were awarded for study in 2009-10. Through grants totaling approximately US$16.2 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 80 nations.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent a continued faith that today’s Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow’s community and world leaders.”

    Hi Stellenbosch Rotary and Rotaract,

I’m just writing to say thank you for the warm wishes for our Haven of Hope Fundraiser, and to let you know it was a great success! We raised R 8,000 for Haven of Hope to buy a soundproof partition, and it was a great night.

I’m including some photos: The first photo is of my Rotary club president Bob and two other members showing the Zulu love letter pins I gave them during my speech about Stellenbosch at one of our Rotary meetings.

The next photo shows me, 2 of my sisters and some of the African dancers we had for the fundraising event.

    Best wishes,
    Sue

    Dear Rotarians

Tammy Phillips, the Stellenbosch Rotaract Club President has challenged us to “bring a friend” to our next social meeting. I would like to extend the challenge to the whole Rotary Family.

The World’s Biggest Walk will take place on Sunday 25 October 2009 on the Sea Point Prommenade. Stellenbosch Rotaract would like to invite you to join is for a brunch on the beach, starting at 10am at the Mouille Point Light House. Please bring a plate of brunch snacks to share with everyone and something to drink and then join us on the walk. It is only 5km and will not take us much more than an hour to complete. The walk itself starts at midday.

The walk has been organised by the Organ Donor Foundation to create awareness, and they hope to get as many people as possible, to walk all over the world on 25 October. It is a great opportunity for Rotaractors and Rotarians and fellow like-minded individuals to meet and enjoy beautiful Cape Town for a good cause!

Please RSVP by 21 October with me at liezenorval@gmail.com

    Warm summer regards,
    Lieze

Our 18 month old Rotaract Club has had a stunning start. Less than 9 months from their charter dinner, the club took on the huge responsibility of organizing and hosting the District Rotaract Conference here in Stellenbosch. Despite the winter weather throwing the coldest, wettest weekend at all, everyone agreed it was the best Rotaract conference in years.

The growing club has raised funds by marshalling at all cycle and running races organized by Rotarians and is firmly committed to supporting the New Energy philosophy of Stellenbosch Rotary. They are also working with the physically challenged of the local Dorothea Special School.

2009 University of Stellenbosch-Student-Orientation saw an excellent marketing exercise which resulted in a huge intake of new members who are all eagerly participating in the latest RYLA camps as well as marshalling activities. Recent highlights include the fortnightly leadership training sessions, such as Toast Masters, where some suprising expert speakers were sourced from amongst our own Rotaractors.

Both Stellenbosch Rotaract and Stellenbosch Rotary Clubs enjoy a close relationship and Rotary sponsors two Rotaractors to attend our fortnightly meetings, both project and dinner evenings, thus strengthening the bonds and providing mutual benefits to members of both clubs.
