A partnership to help Stellenbosch’s street children

Rhine Ruhr (PTY) LTD and the Rotary Club of Stellenbosch have partnered to help Youth Outreach ready a night shelter to accommodate girl street children. The managing director of Rhine Ruhr (PTY) LTD, Mark van der Walt, generously donated goods to the value of R30 000. The donation included 16 double bunk beds, bedding, curtains, a bookshelf and a personal computer.

The Rotary Club of Stellenbosch brought the donor and a social worker at Youth Outreach together to discuss what was needed to open the shelter for girls. Youth Outreach is an organisation that has been helping street children in Stellenbosch since 1997. Until July 2010 Youth Outreach offered accommodation mainly to boys at their facility on the corner of Bird and Bell Streets in Stellenbosch. The donation from Rhine Ruhr (PTY) LTD has ensured that Youth Outreach’s second facility, also in Bell Street, is reaching out to girl children who live on the streets in Stellenbosch.

The Stellenbosch Rotary Club joined in the festive celebration of Rotary International’s 105th birthday which was held at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Tuesday, 23rd of February.

To celebrate the event,  prominent landmarks around the world were illuminated with the End Polio Now message.

In Cape Town, the Kick Polio Out of Africa awareness campaign was launched with the symbolic kicking of a soccer ball signed by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. By putting in the highest bid in a fundraising auction, Stellenbosch club members Barry and Vanessa Eason became the proud owners of the ball, which will be coming home to them after it has travelled through 22 polio-affected countries en route to the RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada, in June.

Apart from its international significance, Stellenbosch was also very proud to induct 3 new members in front of the Old Port Captain’s Office in the waterfront - Cape Town’s illuminated landmark. A warm welcome to Jaco, Laurika and Rene.
